About the Job

The Government of Montserrat is inviting applications from suitably qualified persons for the post of STAFF DISTRICT NURSE, within the Ministry of Health and Social Services.




Provide quality nursing services and ensure maintenance of quality care, to clients by promoting healthy lifestyle through health education and counseling; thereby utilizing the nursing process in accordance with established standards and policies.




1. Administrative

  • Documenting care provided in clients records, using the appropriate forms provided.

  • Establishing links with clients, families, carers and other health professionals.

  • Collaborating with and assists other members of the health care team to provide quality client care.

  • Maintaining confidentiality taking cognizance of the ethical and legal responsibility of nursing.

  • Identifying social care problems and refer to appropriate organizations where necessary.

  • Liaising with other services on the client’s behalf, e.g. Meals on Wheels Committee, Dental Clinic, Nutrition Officer, Physiotherapy, Red Cross etc.

  • Reporting changes in client care, incidents, emergencies, to supervisor or District Medical Officer as appropriate and promptly.

  • Consulting with Supervisor/District Medical Officer when changes are being made to established practice.

  • Checking emergency equipment and reports maintenance needs.


    2. Clinical

  • Ensuring implementation of the nursing component of health      programme e.g. Maternal and Child Health including School Health, Adolescent Health, Family Planning, Ante and Postnatal, Adult Health Care including the elderly.

  • Participating in planning and conducting various clinics and classes as assigned.

  • Identifying and monitor high-risk individuals and groups in the community according them priority care.

  • Managing client care utilizing the nursing process (individual, family and community).

  • Participating in epidemiological surveillance and the control of communicable diseases and advises supervisor and medical officer on the health problems of the community.

  • Initiating and give vaccines to community when necessary.

  • Assessing the physical, social, emotional and psychological    factors that influence the health status of mother and baby.

  • Ensuring prompt referral of abnormalities discovered to the appropriate discipline.

  • Taking responsibility to maintain, improve and evaluate professional knowledge and competence of staff, student midwives and student nurses.

  • Participating in preparation for parenthood education.

  • Providing client centered/individualized care through on-going     assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care.

  • Performing nursing procedures and administer treatment according recognized standards and policies.

  • Assessing, managing, and planning the care of clients.

  • Providing home visits to House bounds, vulnerable, Pre and Post Natal mothers and infants.

    3. Managerial

  • Organizing, direct and supervise staff, activities and programmes within the clinic in keeping with policies and procedures.

  • Participating in resource management activities.

  • Assisting in the supervision, teaching, and evaluation of student nurses and students assigned for work experience.

  • Setting personal goals for professional development and communicates these to Nursing Managers.

  • Participating in development, implementation and evaluation of in-service education programmes.

  • Evaluating nursing interventions and ensure that care plans are upgraded to reflect newly identified nursing care needs and solutions to problems.

    4. Educational

  • Participating in developing, implementing and evaluating community health education programs.

  • Implementing clinical learning experiences for nursing students in Community Health.

  • Participating in public awareness campaigns and educates individuals and community groups about measures to promote and maintain good health, prevent accidents and illness.

  • Educating and counsel patients and their families about certain health problems including communicable and non-communicable diseases, prevention and care.

  • Attending and participating in staff meetings and relate activities: attend workshops, conferences, and classes to increase professional knowledge; serve on committees as assigned.

  • Contributing to the professional growth of others, stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of nursing.

    5. Other duties

  • Taking health and safety precautions to reduce risk to self, clients, staff and visitors to the clinic.

  • Required to be on call 24 hours within the community which she serves except when off on alternate week-ends.

  • Serving as a member of the Mass Casualty Team

  • Performing other job related duties as assigned.



    The applicants must:


  • Have a Certificate/ Associate Degree/Degree in General Nursing
  • Have at least five (5) years’ work experience to include registered nurse and midwifery.
  • Be a registered General Nurse

  • Be a registered Midwife or other recognized post basic qualification.

  • Have a Certificate in Midwifery
  • Have be currently registered with the Nurses and Midwife Board

  • Have knowledge of Procedures and policies in Nursing Care
  • Have knowledge of current trends in Community nursing; geographic, political and socio-economic environment;  knowledge of community resources
  • Possess basic computer word-processing skills

  • Possess good counseling and guidance skills

  • Be able to develop work plans

  • Possess effective communication skills

  • Possess report writing skills

  • Possess team Management skills

  • Be flexible

  • Be able to function independently

  • Be willing to participate in health and health related community activities.






Appointments will be made on a permanent or contractual basis.




The salary scale for the post is R28-22, that is, EC$41,760-EC$50,976 per annum – taxable.

    Shortlisted applicants will be invited to participate in a selection process that involves attending one or more interviews and/or assessment centres.  These interviews are designed to assess the skills, competencies and attitudes of the applicant and may be conducted via SKYPE or in person.  The Interviews and/or Assessment Centres allow the Selection Panel to draw on more evidence about the applicants than can be derived from the written application.
