About the Job

The Government of Montserrat is inviting applications from suitably qualified persons for the post of MEDICAL OFFICER/ANAESTHETIST, within the Ministry of Health and Social Services.



To administer anaesthesia to patients undergoing elective and emergency surgery; provide care in emergency situations to critically ill patients; and conduct district clinics, Emergency Department and Ward on-call sessions when assigned.


  • To perform pre-anaesthetic assessments of all patients for surgery;

  • Administer anaesthetic medication for elective and emergency surgeries and monitor patients during anaesthesia and recovery;

  • Dialogue with the Senior Pharmacist and Storekeeper, Medical Stores to ensure required pharmaceuticals and supplies are stocked in appropriate quantities.

  • Prepare all equipment and drugs prior to the administration of anaesthesia;

  • Supervise the clinical practice of the Nurse Anaesthetist in the operating theatre, recovery area and in the pre-surgery assessment;

  • Conduct scheduled District Clinics as assigned;

  • To conduct Casualty and Ward sessions when assigned;

  • To provide on-call  anaesthesia, casualty and ward services when required;

  • Perform any other duties pertaining to the job function.



    The Applicant should possess the following:

  • An MBBS degree from a recognized University;
  • Diploma or any other recognized postgraduate qualification in Anaesthesia;
  • A minimum of two (2) years’ work experience in anaesthesia, which includes management of hospital in-patients and emergency department patients;
  • Valid certification in BLS and ACLS;
  • Competence in the administration of anaesthetic agents;
  • The ability to work as a member of a Team;
  • Decision making and problem solving skills;
  • The ability to work well under pressure and with limited resources;
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal;
  • The ability to prioritise and organise your work load;
  • Excellent hand-eye co-ordination
  • Good leadership and management skills;
  • The ability to put people at ease and inspire trust and confidence.


  • Appointments will be made on a permanent or contractual basis;

  • Eligible to receive a gratuity of 12.5% of the basic salary upon successful completion of the contract.



The salary scale for the post is R12-8/R12-6, that is, EC$66,852-EC$73,020/ EC$66,852-EC$76,620 per annum – taxable.

    Shortlisted applicants will be invited to participate in a selection process that involves attending one or more interviews and/or assessment centres.  These interviews are designed to assess the skills, competencies and attitudes of the applicant and may be conducted via SKYPE or in person.  The Interviews and/or Assessment Centres allow the Selection Panel to draw on more evidence about the applicants than can be derived from the written application.
