About the Job

Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons for the post of Guidance Counsellor, Montserrat Secondary School in the Ministry of Education.



To deliver Guidance Counselling/Personal, Moral, and Social Education services to secondary school students, and when necessary to parents/guardians.




  • To provide appropriate Personal, Moral and Social Education (PMSE) to groups of students and individual counseling.
  • To provide leadership in consultation with the Principal, and under the supervision of the Education Psychologist for the school’s guidance programme, in accordance with goals and objectives developed cooperatively.
  • To work with the Education Psychologist to facilitate professional development in Guidance and Counselling at the school level.
  • To evaluate the Guidance and Counselling programme at the Secondary School.
  • To provide individuals and group activities in Career Education,  Personal, Moral, Social Education (PSME), Counselling and the coordination of appropriate resources and services.
  • To assist in developing profiles of students (aptitudes, achievement, interests) and providing feedback on the curriculum needs of students where appropriate.
  • To assist teachers to incorporate Guidance Counselling/PSME objectives in the regular curriculum.
  • To liaise with persons and agencies outside the school and within the home on Guidance Counselling/PSME matters.
  • To maintain links with feeder-schools and post-secondary institutions regarding transition.
  • To assist in providing information to teachers regarding the socio-emotional needs of children.
  • To develop and maintain awareness of referral resources in the community.



The successful applicant will report to the Principal of the school but shall receive technical training, advice and support from the Education Psychologist who works from the Pupil Support Unit.



·       The applicant must possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Counselling or related field from a recognized university.

·       A Master’s Degree in Counselling or a related field is deemed as specialized skills and Professional Teacher Training Certification would be an asset.

·       The ability to communicate in Spanish and or French would also be useful.

·       At least 3 (years) working experience at a Secondary Institution.

Salary is in the scale R22-16, that is, $50,976 - $60,480 per annum (taxable). 



Appointment will be made on a contractual basis in the first instance after which permanent arrangements can be offered.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to participate in a selection process that involves attending one or more interviews and/or assessment centres.  These interviews are designed to assess the skills, competencies and attitudes of the applicant and may be conducted via SKYPE or in person.  The Interviews and/or Assessment Centres allow the Selection Panel to draw on more evidence about the applicants than can be derived from the written application.
