About the Job

Applications are invited from suitably qualified and experienced candidates for the post of Trained Teacher, Primary Sector in the Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports in Montserrat. The successful applicant will be appointed before the commencement of the fiscal year in 2021/2022, that is, prior to April 2021.

Job Purpose 

To teach students at the Primary school level so as to develop their mental, emotional, social, spiritual, creative and physical abilities; and to be prepared for secondary level education and for contributing positively to the Community.

Key Responsibilities

The key responsibilities include:

  • provide instruction in specified subjects to groups of students as required by the Ministry of Education;
  • assist in the development of appropriate programmes, prepare schemes of work, lesson plans and teaching aids to facilitate effective delivery and the achievement of objectives.
  • provide appropriate learning experiences to ensure stimulation and motivation to learn;
  • ensure class organisation and immediate surrounding is conducive to learning;
  • review lessons often to ensure that programme is delivered as expected;
  • assist with maintaining discipline in class, on the school compound or when attending or participating in activities sponsored or approved by the school;
  • assist with extra curricula activities;
  • assess students’ performance on a regular basis and discuss performance with students, parents and guardians.
  • assist in the maintenance of hygienic conditions to ensure that children are operating in a healthy environment.
  • recommend children to Guidance Counsellor and or Schools Psychologist on basis of observation or conversation with student;
  • assist in promoting the welfare and wellbeing of pupil, fostering their social and moral development;
  • identify students with Special Education Needs 


The successful applicant will report to the Principal or designate.


The successful applicant should;

  • Have a Certificate, Diploma or Associate Degree in Teacher Education from an approved College or University 
  • Have at least (3) years’ experience in teaching.
  • Demonstrate personal qualities of understanding others, trust, empathy, maturity, conscientiousness, integrity and initiative.


Terms of Appointment

Appointment will be made on a contractual basis in the first instance after which permanent arrangements may be offered.


Basic salary is in the scale R33-21 that is, EC$34,812 - $52,560 per annum.
